Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Although Ash Wednesday tends to be a more somber day in the church calendar, it is a great opportunity to involve children in the practices of the church. Ash Wednesday is full of symbolism, and is both experiential, and formative.
Why celebrate Ash Wednesday?
- It serves as a reminder of our dependence on God and God’s grace
- It sets us on a journey of refreshing and renewing our relationship with God during Lent
- Rituals are important for marking time, and reminding of us God’s goodness
- Things we can touch, see, and smell (like ashes) are experiential reminders of what God has done for us through Jesus
- Confession and repentance are important practices in the Christian faith
